Legend Series-Paul Parnell

 Paul Parnell

Renown Work Ethic

Skilled Scorer

Paul Parnell was born in Peterborough where young men played hockey in the winter and lacrosse in the summer. Included among his boyhood friends were fellow future Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Famers Cy Coombes, Larry Ferguson, and Pat Baker.

Paul played lacrosse for one year at Peewee, two seasons of Bantam and Midget and one year of Juvenile. At age 17, Paul then moved up to play junior in 1956. His work ethic was renown and Paul played so well, while still a teenager, the Peterborough Senior team added Paul to its roster.

Although born with clubfeet, which his mother cured - Paul Parnell became one of the most prolific scorers of his time. In 16 seasons with Victoria and New Westminster, the five-foot-nine, 175-pound Parnell accumulated 921 goals and 880 assists for 1,801 points and 136 hat tricks in 587 games. Add his 84-game Peterborough statistics to this – 68 goals and 49 assists for 117 points – for a fantastic 1,918-point career.

Among his many accomplishments when he retired, Paul held or shared:

Member of 5 Mann Cup Champion teams (1970 and 1972);

Mann Cup Most Valuable Player twice;

23 Western Lacrosse Association record and three Mann Cup records;

Selection to the All-Star Team 14 of his 15 years at New Westminster (seven to the first team);

City of New Westminster 1965 Athlete of the Year;

Member of the 1968 North American Professional Lacrosse Champions

Member of the 1974 Team Canada who participated in the World Field Lacrosse Championships in Australia

Inducted into the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1980.
