Uncommon Fit -  A Cut above the Rest

Born in 1982, lacrosse has been part of Jamie Plunkett’s life for as long as he can remember. Raised in Peterborough, Ontario – Jamie was exposed to lacrosse at an early age beginning playing at age 4 at the peanut level. He played both house league and rep all the way up to midget for the Peterborough Lakers minor lacrosse system.

Standing 5’11”, weighing a solid 190 pounds and competitive in nature, Jamie played Junior “A” for two seasons with the hometown Peterborough team. He also played in Burnaby and Victoria, British Columbia for parts of three seasons. In a total of 143 regular season and playoff games, Jamie scored 26 goals, added 64 assists for a total of 90 points. Of note, he racked up 678 penalty minutes. After graduating from junior lacrosse, Jamie played one season of Major Series with Barrie followed by parts of four seasons of Senior “B” lacrosse with Ajax, where in 60 games he scored 62 goals, 48 assists for a total of 110 points, along with 168 penalty minutes.

Jamie Plunkett also played professional lacrosse with the Boston Rockhoppers and Hershey Haymakers of the North American Lacrosse League. In addition, he played for the Arizona Sting of the National Lacrosse League. After playing a season with the Ajax Pickering Rock of the OLA Senior “B” league in 2009 with his friend Czech lacrosse legend Pavel Dosly, Jamie travelled to Europe in 2009 playing two years of third division hockey and club lacrosse.

Without question, Jamie Plunkett has made a significant mark in lacrosse for his efforts in growing the game of lacrosse on an international basis. While coaching field lacrosse in Berlin, Germany for the period of 2012-2015, Plunkett founded  the Deutschland Adler Lacrosse Club – Germany’s first indoor lacrosse team.

He played for the Czech National Lacrosse team in the 2011 World Indoor Lacrosse Championships held in Prague leading the team to a 4th place finish, losing in the bronze medal game to the United States. Jamie also represented the Czech team in 2012 at the European Lacrosse Championship where he led the team in scoring. He moved to Germany in April 2012 when he was hired to coach men's and youth field lacrosse for the Berlin Blax. Jamie created an indoor team to play in the European Lacrosse League reaching the final three straight years and winning the championship twice.

As his playing career began to wind down, for more than the past decade, Jamie Plunkett is known for being the driving force behind the company Uncommon Fit.  An innovative athletic lifestyle company, Uncommon Fit was started by three friends who were weary of having to purchase hockey cut or field lacrosse uniforms for box lacrosse. Jamie speaks of being “motivated to create cool custom box lacrosse uniforms”. Uncommon Fit started operations in 2010 in New Jersey and quickly grew in the area and internationally.

The company creates “awesome threads customized with the intent of every player looking, playing and feeling good. Uniforms are designed to deliberately consider the “intent of the team or program purchasing the product”. Uncommon Fit strives to “reflect elite, funky, dangerous or even goofy design, being thoughtful about every detail, to ensure to achieve the purchaser’s intent”.

The company has expanded to countries world wide. Jamie noted, “We have outfitted teams on 6 of the 7 continents, and once Antarctica gets a team they will be the next best-looking team on the floor”.

Jamie Plunkett is proud of the success of Uncommon Fit commenting, “We have been very fortunate to work with local teams and clubs and national teams all across the world, which is very exciting to see. This includes teams winning the Mann Cup, Minto Cup, European Championships, as well as local club leagues. We are appreciative of all the teams who put their trust in us to make them - #lookgoodplaybetter - night in and night out”.

The company has expanded into other sports beyond box and field lacrosse including hockey, baseball, basketball, and volleyball. Plunkett noted, “From tyke to the beer leagues, you always have to look good. From light-weight for house league to the highest levels of competition for competitive teams, we have you covered”.

Uncommon Fit has expanded far beyond team sweater and produce an array of apparel including performance tops (long and short sleeve), hats, shorts, socks, jackets, sweatpants/joggers, hoodies and ¼ zipper tops.

In the 2022 season, fans of Ontario based Major Series Lacrosse became familiar with the unique commemorative logo created by Uncommon Fit designed to celebrate 150 years of lacrosse in Peterborough, Ontario with lacrosse being the oldest and most successful sport in the city of Peterborough’s history.

Over decades of time, the sport of  lacrosse has seen changes to the game such as the introduction of plastic sticks, offence/defence style of play, expanded coaching staffs, along with far more attention to personal and team fitness and training. The snazzy product line of Uncommon Fit can be included among the significant and innovative changes and improvements to lacrosse. Uncommon Fit is an amazing story. The initiative and innovative way of thinking has had an impact on not just lacrosse, but multiple sports – an example of a truly great Canadian success story. And in typical Canadian fashion – largely unheralded.
